7 Ups & 5 Downs From AEW Fyter Fest 2021 Night 2
1. MULTIPLE Interference Spots
Speaking of excessive.
- Chris Jericho vs. Shawn Spears
- Doc Gallows vs. Frankie Kazarian
- Darby Allin vs. Wheeler YUTA
- Britt Baker vs. Nyla Rose
- The Blade vs. Orange Cassidy
What do these five matches have in common? Each featured some form of outside activity or interference that either contributed directly to the finish or diverted attention away from the performers at an inopportune moment. That's too much - and AEW continues to lean on this trope to the point of destructivity.
Hopes that AEW had left this habit in the Friday night era were dashed last night, when five of the evening's six matches were blighted by it. There's no sense of moderation. Used sparingly, these techniques can be effective, but when you spam them in the vast majority of a single show's matches, people get weary and start to lose faith in the booking process.
It's good that AEW continues to book few disqualifications and countouts, but they're being too cute about skirting the "clean finish" line at the moment.
