7 Ups & 8 Downs From WWE Raw: In Your Face (Sep 14)
2. Dominik Mysterio, Again
Last night's cage match was very WWE. Laden with tropes and energy-sapping escape spots, it brought little to the table you haven't already seen and a harsher critic would find fault with a lot of it, from the glut of needless cage-climbing moments to the spot where Dominik Mysterio clearly had Seth Rollins beaten but chose to hit a Frog Splash rather than scale the structure and take the win.
Those complaints exist. They have merit. Raising them is fine, though the wrestlers transcended them with two excellent performances far beyond the material, delivering a match on pair with everything else they have done throughout this feud.
Rollins once again proved himself an excellent feeder, controlling the performance while laying the groundwork for Dominik's flippy lucha spots. Mysterio's fundamentals aren't there yet (of course they aren't - this was his sixth match) but professional wrestling has always been about highlighting the positives and hiding the negatives. This match was that to a tee: Dominik was once again allowed to show off his flashy stuff in spirited fightbacks and never looked exposed, demonstrating his, Rollins', and perhaps Rey's respective wrestling IQs, if the lucha legend played a part in piecing this together.
Seth won after hitting two Curb Stomps in a row, seemingly ending the rivalry. Both him and Dominik should be immensely proud of their efforts since first colliding at SummerSlam.
