7 Ups And 3 Downs For Last Night's NXT (May 6)

5. Genius Of The Sly

Charlotte Shirai

This might honestly have been the most anticipated match in WWE this year. That feels like a massive statement but it's the best women's wrestler on the main roster, vs the best women's wrestler in NXT and they've never actually done that before. No @'s on that please, you might not like Charlotte but she's a bona fide All-Timer in the ring and if you don't think Io's the best thing on this show then you've not been paying attention.

Usual WWE logic (and, as much as it pains me to say it the NXT Hype vs Reality problem) meant that this should have been a bit of a letdown but, for the most part, this delivered. The two don't have heat, they've massively failed to get an actual rivalry going here, but they did have chemistry. The contrast of styles, the power vs speed story, Charlotte digging into her old NXT back catalogue, this was superbly crafted.

The initial reaction to the DQ finish won't be positive, as it feels incredibly cheap in the context of such a great match, but given Io was never going to dethrone Charlotte here it probably makes sense in the long run. Shirai's now got a "win" over Charlotte and there's now tension between her and the returning Ripley. You'd have loved to see the champion taken all the way ahead of a decisive finish, but this at least adds layers.
