AEW Talent Frustrated By Trey Miguel Release, Perceived Double Standards (AEW News)
Trey Miguel has been fired for past social media posts. Some in AEW aren't happy about it.
Fightful Select reports that some behind the scenes at AEW are unhappy about the recent hiring then swift firing of Trey Miguel. The ex-TNA man was set to debut as part of The Rascalz alongside Zachary Wentz, Dezmond Xavier and Myron Reed, but he's since been cut loose from the roster before even appearing on television.
According to Fightful, this move is "heavily implied to be a WBD decision". Many fans had been confused by this, because Tony Khan runs AEW. Thus, people wondered why somebody else was going over his head to make key hirings/firings, but it appears to have been a Warner Bros Discovery call.
Further, the decision stems from a social media post deemed homophobic from 2020. It's worth noting that the wrestler apologised for the content of that post almost immediately at the time. This tracks with comments Trey himself made that he's "made a lot of mistakes in [his] time", but has tried his "best to put a better foot forward after".
Fightful noted that internal reaction in AEW has been that of "frustration". Those miffed about Miguel's plight have pointed out that others in the WBD food chain haven't been treated the same way despite making cutting or controversial comments of their own in the past.
The website repeatedly stated that nobody in AEW was involved in firing Trey.
A source from Warner Bros said this: "I can’t speak to the validity of rumours, but I can’t say I agree the decision if true. If it were an unhealthy pattern of behaviour, that’s cause for alarm, but that does not seem to be the case here".
The plot thickens then. According to reports, All Elite top brass didn't have a say in the matter. WBD acted swiftly to remove Trey Miguel from the group's roster before he'd even debuted, and it all stems from a social post almost 6 years ago now. Critics within the AEW system are concerned about double standards being applied here.
