7 Ups And 4 Downs From WWE Raw (13 March - Review)

3. Movie Parody Fails

Can we just take a second to quickly acknowledge – and give negative marks to – the WrestleMania movie parodies that have aired in recent weeks?

Whereas the previous set of parodies before WrestleMania 21 were fondly remembered and held up pretty well, these have been largely humorless, poorly written scenes that lean more heavily into the wrestling aspect than being send-ups of popular movies with some inside jokes interspersed.

Monday’s Stranger Things parody was… OK? It wasn’t particularly funny or memorable, with John Cena simply asking Rhea Ripley if she was feeling the pressure of Mania before Ripley crushed a soda can with her mind.

The Miz & Maryse’s Top Gun scene was lame, Montez Ford & Bianca Belair’s Titanic was average at best, and Seth Rollins & Becky Lynch’s Joker send-up was the right call, but still felt flat. Contrast that with Pulp Fiction, Braveheart, A Few Good Men and Taxi Driver from 2005’s offering.

If you can’t make these memorable and enjoyable, then don’t bother.

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
