7 Ups And 8 Downs From WWE King Of The Ring 2002

2. Down - Triple H Vs. Undertaker Is Just A Waste Of Time

It’s strange to see a show where Triple H and The Undertaker fighting for the title is an afterthought, yet here we are. For the main event of the show, these two have an absolute nonstarter.

Triple H as a babyface is, quite frankly, awful. Yes, it’s cliche for smarky wrestling fans to blather on about how certain wrestlers need to stay heel forever and ever, but for Triple H, it definitely applies. Without being the calculating, vicious heel, Hunter is just another guy whose motivation is just “I want the belt.” Undertaker, meanwhile, is just keeping the belt warm as a heel biker, and he has no character other than “Rawr, I’m evil and I’m gonna beat you up.”

In-ring, there’s just nothing to talk about. The match is mostly Hunter and ‘Taker brawling or teasing finishers. Before the main event, WWE put Paul Heyman on guest commentary, supposedly so JR and King can have something interesting to talk about, namely the bubbling feud between The Rock and Brock Lesnar.

As for Hunter vs. ‘Taker? No chance. This match is just white noise.
