7 Ways NXT Is WWE's New SmackDown

4. A Shot In The Arm For The Old School

When the Brand Extension was in full force, all kinds of low and mid-card talent were given the opportunity to job themselves on a weekly basis. Remember the Hurricane? Exactly. But now with the combined supershows that Raw and SmackDown have now become, superstars have to fight tooth and nail for their place on an increasingly narrowing roster in order to step up and grab McMahon€™s coveted brass rings. What this means for the lower and mid card guys is that they either have to go out and embarrass themselves in two minute comedy matches (Adam Rose is great; the Bunny is not) or be forced to go home penniless that week... Unless of course they sidle on down to NXT and get the chance to help one of the young bucks get over. Titus O€™Neil was floundering in tag team hell when he got the opportunity to let Sami Zayn use him as a stepping stone on his road to redemption and, in the Woman€™s division, Natalya got to prove she was more than a jobber for AJ Lee when she gave Charlotte a run for the championship. But of course the biggest success story in this regard is Sin Cara who was literally going nowhere on the main roster but managed to strike tag-team gold as one-half of the Lucha Dragons in NXT. Without Kalisto by his side, the Mexican might have found himself back down south but, in NXT, he€™s found his second chance.
