7 Wrestling Characters I Read Way Too Much Into
4. Eugene
Nick Dinsmore was a hell of a professional wrestler. Whether
in tag team with Rob Conway or working on his own, the man was a force to be
reckoned with inside the squared circle. He won title after title in WWE
developmental, and it was surely only a matter of time before he found himself
called up to the main roster to further showcase his skills.
Dinsmore continually found himself overlooked in favour of more generically attractive options. Heck, his own partner was called up ahead of him, despite Dinsmore being the top of his class and then some. It became increasingly clear to Nick Dinsmore that he wasn’t what the WWE was looking for; he had to give them something different.
Out of this, Eugene was born. By gaining the passive sympathy of WWE management, Dinsmore could finally find himself performing on the biggest stage of them all. Yeah, he had to do it through an assumed personality, but that is just a minor minus. When the time was right, Eugene would shed his skin and Nick Dinsmore’s time would arrive.
The only problem was that nobody wanted Eugene to shed his skin. Management loved Eugene more than they ever had Dinsmore, and the audience took to him more than they would have taken to the wrestler’s wrestler. Nick Dinsmore had created something bigger than him, and was forever cursed to be Eugene and nothing else.
Either that or Vince McMahon has a childish sense of humour and thought a wrestler with learning disabilities was funny.
