7 WWE 25th Anniversary RAW Returns Who Couldn't Survive PG

1. The Godfather

Charles Wright wore many different hats during his time with WWE. As Sir Charles in the early 1990s, hardly any fan knew of him. Albeit more successful, his run as Papa Shango garnered a mostly negative response, whether about his character being culturally insensitive or just plain campy. Kama Mustafa did all right with the Nation of Domination but wasn’t an act fans latched onto.

It wasn’t until Wright became known as The Godfather that he and WWE struck gold. And sadly, Wright’s biggest claim to fame was one that could not exist under the restrictions of PG programming. The cigar smoking would be gone. The sexist mannerisms would be gone. All of his ladies, who WWE proudly labeled as “hoes” at the time, would be gone. And most importantly, WWE stock would plummet if they introduced a pimp character now.

Wright certainly made it before playing The Godfather, but it is likely, without his most memorable role, that he would not make it any further up the ladder than he did during his time as Kama or Papa Shango. And in terms of in-ring performance, Papa Shango won such awards as “Most Embarrassing Wrestler” not only due to a bad gimmick but also because of missed cues, such as failing to break up the pinfall between Sid Vicious and Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania VIII.
