7 WWE Angles That Felt Plucked From A Different Time

3. Mordecai Is Plucked From A Cartoon

In the mid-2000s, Vince McMahon wanted to bring back more over-the-top characters. From Eugene to Simon Dean to Paul Burchill, these highly-gimmicked personas populated much of the Ruthless Aggression era’s midcard. However, most striking was Mordecai: a ponderous, sinister priest, who spoke at length about cleansing the world of its sins. And yes: he seemed tailor-made for a feud with the Undertaker... if this were 1993.

Except, this was 2004, and while people had long accepted the Undertaker and Kane as magical because they’re institutions, they weren’t willing to buy into another spooky wizard guy. After an underwhelming PPV debut against Scotty 2 Hotty, Mordecai was shuffled off SmackDown, and fans didn’t see the character again.

The performer who portrayed him wouldn’t be seen again until 2006, where he debuted as Kevin Thorn, a vampire, on ECW.
