It makes sense to believe that Kane was supposed to waltz off into the sunset following a defeat to The Undertaker at WrestleMania XIV. After that match, the creative team scrambled to come up with ideas for him, including the random 24-hour reign as WWF Champ he kickstarted at King Of The Ring '98. Worse was to come when Kane's original purpose was ignored.

What sense did it make for Kane and Undertaker to join forces in the summer? Yes, the 'Brothers Of Destruction' idea would become workable later on, but not in 1998, less than a full year into Kane's run. All that backstory about Kane seeking vengeance on his sibling for burning him as a child was thrown out the window immediately.

The idea that Kane and The Undertaker were united to take the WWF Title from Steve Austin seemed sketchy then, and it's outright preposterous now. Almost overnight, these warring family members made peace just so they could help the evil Mr. McMahon dethrone Stone Cold? Come on.
