Nobody should be fooled into thinking the Mr. McMahon vs. Stone Cold feud was anything other than essential. One of the greatest rivalries in WWE history, it produced some of the promotion's best ever moments. The 1999 Royal Rumble was not one of them, however.

The entire match revolved around McMahon and Austin's feud. Writing part of the Rumble to tell this story would have been fine, but booking Vince and Stone Cold as the first entrants, then writing them to leave and enter the ring at random felt like overkill. It was difficult to concentrate on or care about anyone else involved with this melodrama going on.

By the time The Rock aided McMahon in eliminating Austin for the win, the match had degenerated into farce. The '99 Rumble is a tough watch today, and it must be considered one of the worst. McMahon and Austin spent way too much time outside the ring, a silly idea when the aim of the Rumble is to stay inside it.
