8 Big Questions Behind WWE’s Attempts To Buy ROH
1. Is This Just The Beginning?
This isn’t the first highly aggressive move made by WWE lately. The UK Title was seen by many as a means of shutting down competition in the burgeoning British wrestling scene, and the company’s relationships with the likes of PROGRESS are eerily similarly to those WWE forged before crippling the old territorial system. Furthermore, their working agreement with EVOLVE resulted in a comprehensive talent raid that has left the promotion looking unrecognisable.
It begs the question: “what’s next?” Even if WWE aren’t successful in purchasing ROH, there's a strong chance we’re not yet past the early stages of their expansion, and that they’ll soon set their sights on other companies.
The British promotions are among the most hyped in the world at the moment, and already find themselves on WWE’s radar. There has been talk of future tournaments in Japan and Latin America as well, opening the possibility of WWE moving into those markets by snapping up a smaller company or two.
There’s a strong possibility that we’re about to enter wrestling’s most transformational period since the end of the territories. All the hallmarks are there, and whether you see WWE’s aggression as a positive or negative, the next few years are going to be rife with turmoil.
