John Cena provided the blueprint that Roman Reigns now uses, and he did it over a decade ago. Initially popular due to his bad-boy rap persona, Cena morphed into the poster child for WWE's PG direction over time, and people hated him for it.

This didn't sit well with WWE at first. Not knowing how to handle someone they so desperately wanted to be a shining example of goodness being booed out of each building, the creative team tried to weather the storm. When that didn't work, they (and Cena himself) were forced to acknowledge the hostility and use it to build John's 'Rise Above Hate' campaign.

Now, Cena remains on the cusp; too popular with younger fans and (predominantly) adult women to be a true heel, he's also despised by a portion of the adult male audience and loathed by those who are sick of his almost superhuman ways.
