8 Booking Steps To Save The WWE Cruiserweight Title
6. Do Away With The 205 Gimmick
The problem with putting a weight limit on any title is that it makes the thing appear inferior to the WWE/Universal belts. Those titles are always going to be the main attractions on Raw and SmackDown, but there's no reason why the cruiser league can't stand out as something different. Surely that's the point?
As a name, 205 Live instantly makes fans think of smaller wrestlers. The word 'smaller' brings the same connotations as 'less than' would, and that needs to change. There's no need to remind viewers that the guys they're watching don't match up to the Brock Lesnars or Braun Strowmans of this world. Cruiserweights are there to fill a unique spot on the card.
A complete rebrand may be required in order to shed the stigma of 'small wrestlers' and open up the division to fresh faces. Dismissing that 205 tag would allow guys like Apollo Crews or Tyler Breeze to be great additions to the ranks, for example. After that, WWE should focus on the actual style of cruiser matches.
