Three years ago, WWE presented a throwaway tag-team match pitting The Bella Twins vs. Paige and Natalya on the Royal Rumble 2015 card. The next year, Charlotte Flair defended her Divas Title against Becky Lynch. Then, in 2017, Flair beat Bayley to retain the Raw Women's Title. Seeing a progression yet?

Good on you, WWE. Good on you for giving hard-working women the platform to succeed and not burying them beneath the more traditional all-male Rumble. By letting the female Rumble main event this year, WWE have flown the flag for women's wrestling higher than ever before.

They were also taking a slight risk.

There were no guarantees that an all-female Rumble peppered with nostalgic returns and lower-level workers like Lana and Dana Brooke was going to cut it in the main event spotlight. The fact it did doesn't only speak volumes about the other talent involved, it also perfectly displays the faith WWE have in the female ranks.
