8 Comedy Wrestlers Who Were Legitimate Tough Guys

2. Mae Young

An integral part of the Attitude Era, the 'hilarious' antics of Mae Young were the WWF's most focused comedy at the time. Mae found herself involved on a week-to-week basis, mostly being the punchline of a joke because she was old or giving birth to a hand. That sentence will never feel okay to type.

What is somewhat forgotten however is that when she wasn't giving birth to hands and courting Mark Henry, Mae Young was getting powerbombed through tables by the Dudley Boyz and stiff lariated by Hardcore Holly. She was well into her 70s at the time, yet she seemed to frequently be on the end of some hellacious beatings.

Her career started just after World War 2, and in her early days she was known as something of a tough mofo. She frequently started fights in bars and generally won them, smoking cigars and drinking whiskey as she went.

Mae Young lived to be 90 years old, and whilst she was comedic relief during the Attitude Era she was as tough as they came.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
