Survivor Series 1998 is one of those Marmite shows that wrestling fans either love or hate. The actual bell-to-bell wrestling was poor and Russoriffic booking was front and centre. As an isolated show, it really doesn't stand up, but it does work within the context of the storylines at the time. You know what else sucks, besides crappy wrestling? WWE's rehashing of the 'Montreal Screwjob' finish, which they did ad nauseam for years and years (until they finally made up with Bret that is). At Survivor Series 98, however, it hadn't been done to death and actually made total sense, given that it was the one year anniversary of the incident and Vince McMahon wanted to crown a new WWF Champion, even if he had to it by force. Vince rang the bell on Mankind as The Rock had him in the Sharpshooter, despite the fact that Foley hadn't tapped and was edging towards the ropes. Vince had screwed him and The Rock was now the corporate champion. There's a wonderful moment where the penny drops for the live crowd, as they realise that the McMahons were orchestrating things over the last few months just to get this moment.
