8 Embarrassing WWE Imposters
1. Imposter Kane
Believe it or not, Kane was seriously considering retirement in 2006. As part of his retirement plans, he wanted to pass on the Kane gimmick to another wrestler. The person chosen for this gig was Drew Hankinson, a WWE developmental prospect who would go on to greater success with Festus and Luke Gallows.
On the 29 May 2006 Raw, the Imposter Kane made his debut, chokeslamming the real Kane during his match with Shelton Benjamin. The angle was immediately intriguing but it would go downhill fast. For a few weeks the Imposter Kane, who wore a 1997 era Kane full body costume, would attack the now unmasked Big Red Machine. It led to a match at Vengeance in June, which the Imposter Kane won with a chokeslam. The match sucked but definitely had some sort of weird surreal appeal to it.
Gallows also deserves a lot of credit for nailing the Kane mannerisms. But yeah, the match sucked. The next night, the angle was quickly dropped, with the real Kane attacking the Imposter Kane, stealing his mask and throwing him out of the arena. Apparently, Glenn Jacobs had reconsidered retirement and WWE felt that the Imposter Kane gimmick had run its course. Amazingly, the story was going to play out in a way that the Imposter Kane would be revealed as the real Kane and that the Kane who had been on WWE TV for years had actually imprisoned him and stolen his identity.
