The Royal Rumble is such a staple of the wrestling calendar, such a brilliantly simple concept, that it seems like it could only have been designed by committee, no single mind being big enough to have conceived of it unaided.

But it turns out that's totally wide of the mark. It was actually the brain-child of inaugural Intercontinental Champion and long-time WWE writer Pat Patterson, who dreamed it up on his own - presumably - at some point during the late 1980s.

The fact that Vince McMahon, apparently, took some persuading before he was prepared to give it a try just goes to show that even the biggest geniuses occasionally get things wrong (but even then he did get it right in the end).
