8 Legendary Tales Of Badassery From Steve Austin And Ric Flair

7. Blackjack Mulligan Vs. Harley Race

Another legendary tough guy was 7-time NWA World champion Harley Race. Ric Flair has gone on record saying that the NWA would often send Harley along with him to Japan when "The Nature Boy" was heading over to defend his title, to ensure the Japanese didn€™t have anyone shoot on him and take the belt. Harley has been quoted as saying €œIf I hit a man with my left hand and he doesn€™t go down, I walk around behind him to see what€™s holding him up.€ You just didn€™t mess with the guy unless you had to. Blackjack Mulligan apparently had to. Flair tells the story of a night the two scrappers got into a brawl in a hotel room. Mulligan punched Race, which sent €œHandsome€ Harley into the gap between the beds and he became lodged in between them and couldn€™t escape. The larger Texan got on top of Race and the two went at it before eventually being separated by the rest of the boys. Flair says he was nervous around the two men for the next several days because he was sure the conflict would erupt into violence once more, but surprisingly it never did. Whether that was due to Race€™s willingness to let it go or him balking at the thought of having to square off with Mulligan again is anyone€™s guess.
