8 Major Ways MMA Is Influencing WWE
4. Commentary
A few years ago, during Shannon Moore's most recent TNA run, I remember watching a match of his and scoffing at Tazz's commentary. The colour man described Moore as securing full mount and using ground and pound on his opponent, both terms with strong ties to the language of MMA.
At the time, I remember scoffing at the call, as it seemed ludicrously out of place in the colourful, gimmick-filled world of pro wrestling. Nowadays, it's not uncommon to hear certain announcers treat entire matches like a UFC main event - particularly those with experience calling MMA or boxing such as Mauro Ranallo.
Even more tellingly, it no longer seems so out of place.
