When Sami Zayn appeared on RAW in Montreal on May 4th, 2015 to answer John Cena’s US Championship Open Challenge, the Montréal native got a huge ovation, and proceeded to put on one of the best RAW matches of the year, as well as arguably the best match Cena had for the US Championship. It was as clear a sign as any that Zayn was finally being brought to the main roster, after toiling away for so long in NXT.

Sadly, shortly after the match started, Zayn landed awkwardly from a belly-to-back Suplex, and looked like he injured his shoulder. In the end, that turned out to be a legitimate injury, and Zayn was put on the shelf for an estimated six months, halting his ascent to the main roster.

This easily the most disappointing injuries of the year so far because Zayn is an incredibly popular wrestler who has spent years putting on awesome matches and was an obvious favorite of regular NXT fans. Regrettably, Zayn cannot wrestle for WWE until around December or next January, halting the rise of what many believe to be the man who’s most deserving to be on the main roster.

At least this entry has a silver lining; Zayn’s injury accelerated Kevin Owens’ main roster debut, and he has been soundly praised for his excellent matches with John Cena and incredible heel abilities. Though one cannot help but wonder where Zayn would’ve been if his main roster debut didn’t end in injury…
