Many fans assumed that The Undertaker would be wrestling John Cena at WrestleMania 33. After all, the bout was originally scheduled for last year's show, but an injury to Cena kept "Big Match John" from performing at the event.

It's possible that Undertaker-Cena was on a rough draft of this year's card, but very early in the year, The Wrestling Observer reported that higher-ups were rewriting the show, adding several matches that would please fans and show that the company was planning for the future. The Observer was coy about specific details, but hints dropped seemed to indicate that Finn Balor - who was rightfully predicted to return from injury by 'Mania - would have the coveted role of facing The Undertaker at the show.

The bout was a dream match in the sense that it was Undertaker versus a younger, super-athletic worker, and that it would feel like a true clash of the past versus the future. Ultimately, though, the company decided to give Roman Reigns the match with "The Phenom." As it's been heavily rumored that WrestleMania will feature Undertaker's last bout (he's in dire need of hip replacement surgery), perhaps the company preferred to book him against someone they wanted him to put over.
