As The Undertaker was scheduled for other things, so too did Roman Reigns have plans of his own. When Braun Strowman was starting to gain momentum via a win streak and improved ring work, he was penciled in to take on Reigns at the show of shows.

The details of the match were up in the air - would they be colliding in a midcard match for Reigns's United States Title? Would Strowman win the Royal Rumble, Reigns win the Universal Title, and their bout be for all the marbles?

Reigns lost the United States Championship before the Royal Rumble, but at the event, the opening salvo in the feud seemed to be fired - Strowman attacked Reigns, costing him his Universal Title bout. Unfortunately for the beastly newcomer, though, higher-ups decided to just do the match at Fastlane. There would be no marquee 'Mania match for Strowman, no huge payday - instead, his winning streak came to an end at Reigns's hands on March 5.
