4. The WWE Championship Appearing On WCW Monday Nitro
If Vince McMahon didn't take action on Bret Hart, there was a possible scenario where Bret could have appeared live on WCW Monday Nitro with the WWE Championship. This could have been a fatal blow in the Monday Night War and was something that Vince McMahon absolutely could not risk. More than likely, Bret wouldn't have done such a thing. He obviously loved his time in WWE and didn't want to leave. However, he left Vince with no choice in the matter. He didn't want to do business the way that others in the past had to. Hulk Hogan made the difficult choice to drop the WWE Championship to Ultimate Warrior, The Undertaker and Yokozuna in similar situations. Why was Bret thinking he was above this? It has been noted in the years following "The Montreal Screwjob" that Vince trusted that Bret wouldn't engage in such a heinous act. But Vince didn't trust Eric Bischoff who was in charge of WCW. Just two years earlier, WWE Women's Champion Alundra Blayze appeared live on WCW Monday Nitro as her former persona, Madusa, and dropped the WWE Women's Champion in a trash can. It was a risk that Vince could not take under any circumstances and is much more serious than Bret not wanting to lose a match in Montreal to Shawn Michaels.
