8 Reasons Bret Hart Deserved To Be Screwed At Survivor Series 1997
3. Vince Did Everything He Could To Appease Bret
Since Bret was set to leave, the logical scenario was to get the championship back on Shawn Michaels. Considering Shawn was running strong as a heel, and the rivalry with Bret Hart was at a fever pitch, it made perfect sense for one final battle between the two. In the weeks leading up to Survivor Series 1997, Vince McMahon presented many different scenarios for Bret's exit. The main issue was that Bret did not want to drop the WWE Championship in Canada, whether it was Montreal or Ottawa. There were a ton of scenarios presented. Ultimately, Vince came up with a scenario where Bret would lose to Shawn Michaels clean at Survivor Series and still be able to give a farewell address the next night on Monday Night Raw; a situation which was unprecedented in professional wrestling. This wasn't good enough for Bret. Bret offered to drop the belt to the likes of Steve Austin, Ken Shamrock, Vader, Undertaker or Mankind, but he would not, under any circumstances, drop the championship to Shawn Michaels. A disqualification finish was proposed to Bret and accepted at the last minute...a mere few hours before the match was set to take place. Bret was becoming extremely difficult to work with. But did he really deserve the treatment that he received at Survivor Series 1997 after nearly 14 years of remarkable service?
