8 Reasons Why WWE's Tag Team Divisions Are Failing
6. An Extreme Lack Of Depth
Raw and SmackDown’s tag divisions shouldn’t be struggling for depth at the moment, but they are. There’s no shortage of available teams on either brand, and with 12 teams currently active across both shows, this should be more than enough to create two credible divisions.
Unfortunately, only a handful of teams bring any real credibility to the table. On Raw, The Shining Stars and Golden Truth are no more than enhancement teams, Enzo & Big Cass spend as much time screwing around in singles matches as they do teaming together, and champions Gallows & Anderson have their fair share of bad moments. SmackDown, meanwhile, is a total dead loss outside of American Alpha and The Usos.
The lack of depth has seen Alpha reduced to defending their championships against teams like The Ascension, which speaks volumes of the poor job WWE have done in building these teams up. The Ascension legitimately haven’t won a traditional tag team match since 2015, yet they’re still competing for SmackDown’s titles on a semi-regular basis. What part of that makes any sense?
Quality competition is a must, and WWE must invest time in rebuilding these teams or replacing them with acts whose credibility isn’t already shot to pieces. Otherwise, the divisions may never feel important again.
