The Rated R Superstar’s Royal Rumble 2020 appearance is right up there as one of the most exciting returns in wrestling history. Fans are fickle however and two years into his revived run the novelty had begun to wane. Edge needed a refresh to stay interesting and leading a stable wasn’t necessarily a bad direction.

This darker turn gave Edge some new music for the first time in 18 years, as well as some moody purple lighting. However, it was when Adam Copeland began to speak that things fell apart. Early The Judgement Day promos were rambling and aimless, making reference to Edge’s time with the Brood as well as taking cheap potshots at local sports teams.

The “cult” identity felt forced and incomplete. Phrases like “mountain of omnipotence” meant absolutely nothing.

It was a mess and whilst we all hoped it would take better shape, more so for the others members Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley, who desperately needed something to do, it was evident that it wasn’t working.

Edge’s time as leader of the group lasted less than four months before he was betrayed, apparently leaving The Judgement Day because of “creative differences” backstage. This might explain why it had such a tough time connecting with fans, as it was being pulled in multiple different directions from day one.
