4. Lacey Evans

If wrestling wasn’t scripted, you’d have plenty of reasons to worry about Lacey Evans because through the spring of 2022 she had some startling identity issues.

The last time fans saw Evans was February 2021 where she was playing a villainous character who had apparently been sleeping with the geriatric sack of bones called Ric Flair.

Her return from maternity leave in April 2022 saw her try to get away from that mess as much as possible. An emotional vignette showed the superstar telling a distressing story about her childhood in order to garner sympathy. Strangely, the video aired on SmackDown but Lacey suddenly returned on Raw as a generic heel. In June, she made her promised SmackDown re-debut as this strong, honourable woman who earned a spot in the Money in the Bank ladder match.

What happened when she was unsuccessful in grabbing the briefcase? Why of course, she turned heel again the following week.

Despite being a Mother and a former Marine with a tough upbringing, it was immediately obvious that Lacey wouldn’t connect as a babyface. Having a tough childhood isn’t necessarily enough to make fans sympathetic to your cause and Lacey’s attitude was just better suited as a dastardly villain.

The company was hesitant to commit to the idea for good reason and had to do a full about-turn when it wasn’t working out.
