The characterisation of Elias, whilst entertaining, is a bit all over the shop right now. Fans chant along with his catchphrases and do find humour in his town-bashing songs, and yet he's supposed to be a heel feuding with babyfaces like Bobby Roode.

Those issues with Roode have followed on from empty skirmishes with John Cena that were never properly developed.

Cena and Elias clashed on the Christmas Day edition of Raw, as well as at Raw 25 and in a Triple Threat also involving Braun Strowman in early February. Then, before The Undertaker's return, Elias interrupted Cena at WrestleMania 34 and was promptly put in his place.

After that, WWE just sort of forgot that Elias had targeted one of the biggest stars in the company and spoke passionately on the mic about removing Cena from WWE. All talk of Elias making a name for himself at Cena's expense was cancelled and he randomly moved on to Roode.
