8 Stupid WWE Gimmicks That Got Over Huge
6. Goldust
The Goldust character has shown to have remarkable staying power. Here we are, twenty years after it debuted, and Goldust is still a featured performer on WWE television. The 47-year-old has wrestled as plain old Dustin Runnels, Seven, Black Reign and a under a couple of other gimmicks, but it is Goldust for which he is most known and which has brought him the most success.
Goldust debuted a short while before WWE's Attitude Era really kicked off and confused and angered fans with his androgyny and overly-sexualised mannerisms. Just what the hell was up with the guy that painted up his face, wore a gold latex body suit and hit on the male wrestlers, anyway?
Despite the controversy and the feeling that the gimmick may have been little more than a way for Vince McMahon to get one over on Goldust's father, Dusty Rhodes, it caught on big time, so much so that Goldust has been fired and brought back many times over the years, because Vince knows he'll get a reaction and can be used in a variety of roles.
Considering how flimsy the character seemed to be back in the mid-to-late 90s, Goldust has managed to move with the times and evolve, keeping himself relevant in the process. Just look at his awesome runs tagging with Booker T and his half-brother, Cody, for evidence of that.
When he tones it down and gets serious, he's great, but when he hams it up and lets it all go, he's even better. A lot of people hate on Goldust, but you cannot deny the success of the character, even if there were a few misses along the way (I'm looking at you, TAFKA Goldust and Tourette's Syndrome Goldust).
