8 Stupid WWE Gimmicks That Got Over Huge

3. Mr. Socko

During the Attitude Era, everything was over like nobody's business. From the opening match guy to the main event, just about every performer this side of Taka Michinoku got a thunderous response and was involved in a storyline of some sort. It truly was a great period for that, if nothing else.

As well as the wrestlers themselves, there were little, shall we say, 'extras' that made an appearance and also caught on with the masses. I'm talking here about Edge and Christian's kazoos, Perry Saturn's 'Moppy', countless dumb catchphrases, the Stinkface and, of course, Mr. Socko.

Ah, Mr. Socko, the sock puppet introduced by Mankind to cheer up a despondent Mr. McMahon as he sat in a hospital bed convalescing from an a*s whooping courtesy of Stone Cold Steve Austin. After putting on the worst (best) puppet show ever, the Hardcore Legend was escorted out of the room as Vince McMahon took a moment and uttered the name 'Mr. Socko' with unparalleled disdain.

The next night, Mr. Socko signs had flooded the arena, with the audience keen to see an appearance from Foleys's sweat sock. Soon, Mankind began incorporating it into his act, wrapping his hand in the dirty old thing before applying his favoured submission hold, the Mandible Claw.

It was so dumb, but so gosh darned over, routinely receiving the biggest response of Foley's matches if not the entire show. He knew he could always rely on it to get him a reaction rather than, you know, falling off of high things and onto concrete (although he still did plenty of that, too).
