8 Stupid WWE Gimmicks That Got Over Huge
1. Eugene
Nick Dinsmore was a solid but unspectacular eight-year veteran, stuck in a rut in WWE's developmental league Ohio Valley Wrestling in 2004, when he pitched a winning idea to get him out of the minor leagues and onto Monday Night Raw.
Contrary to popular opinion, Eugene wasn't the mean-spirited idea idea of Vince McMahon and/or the WWE creative staff. No, it was Dinsmore himself who came up with the character, who was educationally sub-normal outside of the ring but a wrestling genius inside of it.
Eugene debuted on WWE television in the spring of 2004 as the nephew of General Manager Eric Bischoff. He was partnered with William Regal, who was in charge of looking after him. The Blackpool native was reluctant at first, bothered by Eugene constantly making a nuisance out of himself, but eventually grew found of him.
The fans grew fond of Eugene as well, and it wasn't long before his scene-stealing antics were getting some of the loudest reactions of the show. He became so popular in such a short space of time that he was immediately put in the top storylines on Raw, mixing it up with the likes of World Heavyweight Champion Chris Benoit and the members of Evolution.
WWE played the character just right and Dinsmore gave his all to the role. It could have been a career-killer, but Eugene actually got him the most exposure of his career. He became an enhancement guy in later years, yes, but Eugene was over like Rover for a while there.
