8 Things 2021 WWE Royal Rumble Lifted From 2020
5. A Man Interrupts Women's Royal Rumble
The improved presentation of women's wrestling remains the best thing to emerge from the ongoing (R)Evolution, as the focus shifted towards serious competition. Calling back to more Diva-like shenanigans does little to empower the wrestlers and risks the company taking a step back in the wrong direction.
Unfortunately, it seems Vince McMahon hasn't smartened up on the potential negative effects of gumming up major women's matches with comedy acts from the men's division.
For the 2020 women's Royal Rumble match, WWE called back to when Santino Marella won Miss WrestleMania under his Santina gimmick in 2009. In 2020, Marella received his comeuppance from the women wrestlers, though it still seemed peculiar to include him at all.
Marella's appearance in 2020 could be chalked up to symbolism, but that still doesn't excuse the similar stint during the 2021 women's Rumble, which saw R-Truth and his chasing jobbers interrupt the bout just for the sake of another, overplayed 24/7 Title change. Overall, it would be best if WWE avoided inserting goofball outsiders into future Rumbles to leave the focus on the women's in-ring prowess.
