8 Things We Learned From AJ Styles On The Sam Roberts Show
5. Saving James Ellsworth's Life
Roberts talks about the many different people AJ has wrestled throughout the year and brings up James Ellsworth, which brings about a slight chuckle from the former WWE world champion. Sam talks about the match they had on SmackDown where AJ was performing the Styles Clash on Ellsworth and it looked like James instinctively went to tuck his head, something that could have injured him greatly,
He wants to know how quickly you have to think on your feet in situations like that because it seemed as if lives were saved with AJ's improvisation, and the wrestler laughs in response and says "That's exactly what happened."
He calls the Clash a very safe move but says the only thing he can't control is his opponent's head movement. There have been instances of other wrestlers that have instinctively tucked their head when taking the move and sustained injuries due to it, but luckily Ellsworth was not among them.
Styles speaks about how easy it is to get thrown off by the position you're in when you're upside down about to take the move, and he's grown very weary of that fact and tries to look down at the last second and make sure they're prepared. Usually he's able to feel it, and in the Ellsworth scenario he looked down and saw "James trying to kill himself" so he let up on the move and made sure that he didn't go all the way flat, putting his hands down so that his opponent didn't land on his head.
