8 Things We've Learned From The Hulk Hogan Racism Controversy
7. WWE Are Really Trying To Keep Their Image Clean
WWE used to revel in being the redheaded stepchild of mainstream entertainment, throwing its delerious mix of sex and violence in the face of its critics (of which there were many). Vince and co were frequently derided by so-called moral purists who objected to WWE's content. And Vince and co loved it. How times have changed. It's arguable that, back in the Attitude Era, WWE would try to 'capitalise' on the Hulk Hogan racism storm, perhaps by promoting a racially insensitive character or producing some skit that poked fun at it. Since WWE went PG in 2008, however, that has no chance of happening in today's WWE. The company are really trying to clean up their image, removing most of the more salacious elements from their programming. Nowadays, the women are covered up, blood is banned and a wrestler can even be fired for choking someone with their tie. WWE disassociating themselves from one of their biggest and most valuable stars ever is proof positive that WWE are trying to clean up their act. It doesn't matter if you're Hulk Hogan or Stevie Richards: if you paint the company in a negative light and conflict the with current status quo, you will be let go.
