8 Things You Need To Know About XFL 2020

2. This Could Get Problematic...

Even if you've never watched a minute of NFL action in your life, there's a strong chance you know Colin Kaepernick's name.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is now more known for his social and political stances than his footballing career. In 2016, he made global headlines by protesting perceived racial injustice in the USA by refusing to stand for his national anthem, making him a hero to some, but a villain to others.

It seems very much like Vince McMahon is in the latter camp.

The Chairman didn't say outright Kaepernick wouldn't be welcome, but stated that standing for the anthem will be part of the XFL's rulebook. He called it a "time-honoured tradition that has existed for years and years," and that those who don't abide by it will be punished accordingly, stating "we're here to play football, not deal with politics or social issues." According to the boss, there are plenty of other avenues for players to express their opinions - the XFL shouldn't be one of them.

When asked specifically about Kaepernick, McMahon again returned to the idea that "the quality of the human being" will be an important aspect.

This remains a hot-button topic, and Vince's words will provoke a strong response, though he had no choice but to address the situation. It'll be extremely interesting to see what comes of this, and if Kaepernick himself chooses to speak out.
