In 2005, the WWE innovated the Money In The Bank ladder match, a bout in which a briefcase containing a contract for a WWE singles championship title shot was held above the ring.

The winner of the briefcase has a year to cash it in and hand over the contract to have an immediate shot at the title. However, this match could be anytime and anyplace; usually, babyface or heel, the winner would select an opportunistic time to do so, for example immediately after another particularly debilitating match.

In 2007 TNA created the Feast Or Fired match, involving four briefcases. Three contained title shots, and (in typically TNA thinking), the fourth a pink slip meaning that that ‘winner’ would be fired when they tried to cash in their briefcase.

Yes, the company still called the use of the briefcases ‘cashing in’, even though the Feast Or Fired gimmick didn’t have anything to do with money or any word or phrase that related to banks or cash.
