8 Ups & 3 Downs From AEW Dynamite: New Year's Smash (Jan 6)

5. Moxley's Perfect Explanation

Jon Moxley finally returned to AEW television last night, cutting a pitch-perfect promo that enhanced his status as a tough, gritty babyface in the wake of the Kenny Omega loss and gave a great explanation for him not interfering in 'The Cleaner's' match with Rey Fenix.

Though Mox has "zero tolerance for sh*tty people," he poured his heart and soul into protecting the integrity of the AEW World Championship for the best part of a year. Fenix had scratched and clawed his way to a title shot, getting there the right way, and Moxley, with his honour and integrity, wouldn't violate that. Striking during the match would have spoiled everything his title run was about and undermined Fenix in the process.

"One day, you are going to look into the eyes of the devil and realise you crossed the wrong guy," Moxley said, signing off after a typically strong promo that successfully built anticipation for what would come later in the evening.
