Downs…

3. Just A Match

WWE Raw Sheamus Pete Dunne

Maybe the expectations were a bit too high for a match between Sheamus and Pete Dunne, but an imploding Brawling Brutes match felt surprisingly mundane.

Don’t get it wrong, this match was perfectly fine, well worked and everything, but that’s the floor when it comes to these two. The former friends have been battling backstage and at ringside for some time now, though we saw this match last month and it still feels like a lukewarm feud.

The match might have suffered from following the CM Punk promo, which set the bar for heated rivalries unattainably high. Even the Intercontinental Championship feud between Bron Breakker and Jey Uso is a higher-octane ordeal than Sheamus/Dunne seems to be currently.

The abrupt ending via cricket bat didn’t help matters, and it didn’t exactly scream “rematch” either. Of course, if any two wrestlers can lock up again, beat the tar out of each other and make this writer look foolish for panning Monday’s match, it’s Sheamus and Dunne. Call it a tepid “down” at worst, with the understanding that some might have been rocking along to it.
