8 Ups & 4 Downs From AEW Dynamite (May 13)

1. The Wrong Fire

Jake Roberts
AEW

Jake 'The Snake' Roberts' content was more palatable this week than last. Things like refusing to apologise and spitting misogyny on the microphone are tired, yes, but guaranteed to draw heat from the average AEW consumer, knowing what we do about this audience. Last week's sexual assault vibes were a step too far: this was better.

But the segment still didn't hit.

Roberts and Lance Archer were interrupted by an engine revving. AEW cameras swung to just outside the building where Cody was sitting in his truck, putting his foot on the gas to knock a barricade down. A brawl with Lance ensued. 'The American Nightmare' showed good fire throughout, as he should have, but ultimately took way too much control against a guy like Archer, who retreated up the ramp with Jake to close.

The big, scary monster shouldn't be running away from fights at this stage in his development. Leaving was Jake's decision and AEW can play off that, but even in the brawl, Archer should have looked like more of a beast. A real black mark on his presentation so far, this, as everything up until now had been immaculate.
