8 Ups & 4 Downs From Beyond The Mat
2. Just Chyna?
It's great for all concerned that women's wrestling and the attitude towards women's wrestling has come a long way in 21 years. Things were different in 1999, but WWE's women they still had a story to tell.
It appears that this important component of the sport was largely overlooked in this otherwise detailed documentary, especially when, irrespective of whatever stance of decency people take/took on the affair, the female presence in Attitude Era WWE was one of the biggest draws for it's intended 18-40 male target audience. Very integral to the business.
What we did get was a very nice, albeit brief, segment with Chyna, who explained earnestly that her prowess as a bodybuilder in no way stifled her femininity. If anything, it enhanced it.
There you go! A motherload of preconceptions shattered in one wonderfully crafted statement. So why did they stop there? One can't help think that Chyna's testimony could have segued into a whole arc covering the trials and tribulations of WWE's female talent at that time. Alas, it was seemingly not to be.
