8 Ups & 4 Downs From Impact Wrestling (May 19)
1. Shock To The Brackets
When this World Championship number one contender's tournament began last week, you would be right to predict a victory for either Michael Elgin or Sami Callihan, which made it all that more interesting when they were positioned against each other in the opening round. Perhaps the bigger shock though was that it ended decisively as opposed to a draw that would see both men advance, as 'The Draw' was shockingly ousted at the first hurdle.
'Big Mike' technically had the help of Ken Shamrock here, the same man he ambushed last week, as Sami still wasn't at full health following his war with the Hall of Famer at Rebellion. The former World Champion favoured his ankle heavily throughout this contest, something that Elgin took full advantage of as he used the guard rail to worsen Sami's condition. Callihan technically didn't help himself either, however, sticking to his fast-paced, high-impact style instead of adapting to a slower pace to suit his current ankle issues.
Needless to say, Sami's leg eventually got the better of him as he appeared to tweak it from escaping an Elgin Bomb attempt, opening the door for Elgin to nail his finisher for the win. To say this was a massive shock would be a total understatement. There's a fantastic story developing here too, as Sami has now lost two major matches (and picked up a nagging injury) since turning his back on his now-former oVe cohorts.
Maybe he did need them in his corner after all.
