8 Ups & 5 Downs From Impact Wrestling Slammiversary 2020

4. The American Wolf

Perhaps the most anticipated main event in Impact Wrestling history - certainly in recent times anyway - was this elimination bout for the vacant World Championship. Ace Austin, Eddie Edwards, and Trey all met in the ring, being joined by the returning Rich Swann and Eric Young as the mystery fourth and fifth men, the latter of which came as a major surprise seeing as only one additional competitor was expected here.

The action here was outstanding - Trey busted out a sliding Canadian destroyer for crying out loud. Speaking of Trey though, he was more or less there to fill in the numbers, as the stories began to unfold only once he had been eliminated from the bout. Eric Young was shockingly eliminated second by Swann, who was continuously selling his previously injured leg, with 'EY' then destroying that leg with a steel chair. This sort of insanity is exactly what was needed to remind everyone just how marvelous Young is, while Ace picking up the pieces of an injured Swann provided some character development for him also.

With Ace and Eddie as the final two, who had both fallen through a table earlier on in the contest, we were treated to an excellent back and forth bit in the final few minutes of the match. After both men kicked out of the other's finishers, a second Boston Knee Party, as well as his old Die Hard brainbuster variation, saw Eddie Edwards crowned as a two-time World Champion. Having someone who makes it public that he dedicates his life to the company he's now the champion of is exactly who you need representing the promotion as a top champion.

The post-match arrival of The Good Brothers to save the new champion from Ace Austin and Madman Fulton was a fun way to end the segment, particularly if Gallows and Anderson continue to be aligned with Eddie going forward. An odd alliance? Perhaps, but it's something different nonetheless.
