8 Ways WWE Dropped The Ball With The Divas Revolution

7. Becoming Desperate To Create Buzz

A lot of people were up in arms over the fact that Charlotte's brother, and Ric Flair's son, the late Reid Flair was brought up into the storyline and disrespected by the heel Paige as a means of creating some last minute buzz for the Divas Championship bout at Survivor Series. Personally, I watched the segment after I saw the backlash and I don't think it was as blasphemous as people were insinuating, although it was definitely in bad taste, especially given how uncomfortable the whole segment was leading up to it, and considering that Ric Flair and the rest of his family weren't given any heads up on the matter. The most annoying thing about this segment is that the WWE proved in booking it that Charlotte is not over, in any way, with the fans. If you need to pull on the heart strings and milk the real-life death of a loved one to garner heat for the heel challenger and sympathy for the babyface champion, mere days before the Pay-Per-View, and after having never mentioned said passing in a previous angle, you're obviously not doing something right. Worse things have been said in much better ways. CM Punk and Randy Orton are just two examples of guys that used (much more recent) deaths to get established rivalries over and to create buzz for an upcoming match, but it wasn't done because the babyface in the rivalry wasn't connecting. It was done to take the story to the next level, and that's where they let the ball drop with Charlotte and Paige. The rivalry wasn't built up nearly enough for such a curveball, and despite causing controversy amongst the wrestling world, it failed in the end to make a difference.
