8 Weirdest WWE Romances Ever
1. Mae Young & Mark Henry
The Attitude Era is famed for its collection of larger-than-life characters and envelop-pushing storylines and angles. Stuff like Steve Austin versus Vince McMahon, the DX 'invasion' of WCW and Mick Foley winning his first WWE Title are rightfully lauded. However, there's an awful lot of dross from that period which, while funny looking back on it, was anything but at the time.
I said 'God bless' to Vince McMahon earlier and I'll say it again now for Mae Young. Mae was up for absolutely anything, whether it was being put through a table or clotheslined full-pelt by Hardcore Holly. WWE, perhaps keen to capitalise on this, gave Mae her own storyline in late 1999 when she began an on-screen romance with Mark Henry.
The World's Strongest Man had recently been given the unfortunate task of portraying a sexual deviant, someone who supposedly lost his virginity to his own sister when he was just eight years old. Henry turned babyface and began a relationship with Young, then a sprightly 75 years-old. The relationship was a glorified 'freak show', with WWE spending most of its time joking about the strangeness of their relationship.
The most memorable moments of their romance were Mae Young giving birth to a hand and Henry having to quickly cover his missus up when she exposed her knockers (actually - thankfully - prosthetics) to the world at the 2000 Royal Rumble. Soon after, the couple were history, as Henry was sent down to Ohio Valley Wrestling in order to work on his conditioning and wrestling skills.
It may have been short-lived and it may have taken place over sixteen years ago, but fans still remember the completely off-the-wall pairing, which is sad news indeed for the former World Heavyweight Champion.
