8 Wrestlers Who Didn't "Earn" Their World Title Shots

3. David Arquette - WCW Thunder 2000

While we're bashing Russo's creative ideas, let's revisit another one, although he actually credits Tony Schiavone for this gem. The actor was brought into WCW in a bit of cross-promotion for his wrestling-themed movie, Ready To Rumble. He sided with Diamond Dallas Page and Kanyon in their feud with Eric Bischoff and the New Blood. During a match on Thunder, Arquette teamed with DDP to take on Bischoff and Jeff Jarrett under the stipulation that the man who scored the pinfall would become champion. Dewey from Scream pinned the WCW head honcho and surpassed Tommy Rich as the least worthy champion in the lineage of that title. Russo again defends this by pointing out that it got them mainstream media coverage and was covered in USA Today while failing to realize that if that coverage does nothing to increase your ratings or expand your fanbase - and it didn't - those things are all for naught. Especially when you consider what a huge turn-off it was for the remaining diehard WCW fans.
