Until recently, it wasn't uncommon for John Cena to float around from feud to feud and casually capture world championships without rhyme or reason. Since 2014, however, he has been in the midst of a major character resurgence, and that isn't a coincidence; his ongoing story has been one to watch.

Cena's latest character arc began when he fell short of becoming the inaugural WWE World Heavyweight champion at TLC 2013, and from there, he made it his mission to regain the gold. After overcoming the obstacle of Bray Wyatt in the spring of 2014, he finally fulfilled that goal at Money in the Bank 2014, only to lose the belt to Brock Lesnar mere months later at SummerSlam.

Once he was unsuccessful in becoming a 16-time world champion (a record he has yet to break), he shifted his focus to the United States Championship, a title he held for the better part of 2015. During this time, he became one of the company's best all-around competitors, taking part in some of the best bouts all year.

He took time off to film "American Grit" and rehabilitate a shoulder injury at the start of 2016 but is now back to serve as the measuring stick for success. Following his feud with AJ Styles, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for Cena, especially since he is currently more intriguing as an on-air personality than he has been in a long while.
