8 WWE Superstars Who Could Have Surpassed John Cena As “The Guy”

1. Roman Reigns

No matter how hard they try, Roman Reigns will never be "the guy."

That was evident at 2015's Royal Rumble event when he emerged victorious in the titular match and was booed out of the building by those in attendance. Officials attempted to rehab him in the remainder of the year, but nothing seemed to work. Now, almost three years later, one has to question whether he will ever get to that point.

It's not that Reigns doesn't have all of (okay, most of) the tools necessary to be a worthy successor to John Cena. Rather, WWE fails to see that turning him heel first would be the right route to take. They are adamant that having him beat Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 34 will solve their problems.

If that wasn't the case following his huge wins against Triple H and The Undertaker these past two years, why will next spring be any different?

Reigns could have and should have been the person to carry the company into the future, but questionable booking decisions have been his worst enemy. His clean win over Cena was supposed to cement him as "the guy" going forward, but the sad reality is that it might have been too little, too late.
